Weather in Philadelphia

Philadelphia has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Bear in mind that precipitation is evenly distributed throughout the year, so it is best to pack an umbrella with you.

Spring (March to May) usually comes later than many locals would like. In March, the average high is 13°C (55°F) while the average low is 1°C (34°F). But the weather warms up considerably by April, with wildflowers start to bloom and people come out in droves to enjoy the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival. The second weekend in May sees Philadelphia hosting the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta, the largest collegiate regatta in North America.

Summer (June to August) is lovely and a popular period for families with children. Being the birthplace of America where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed, Philly celebrates the Fourth of July with fireworks, free concerts and many patriotic events. Temperatures in July may reach 31°C (88°F) so keep hydrated with plenty of water.

Autumn (September to November) is pleasant and beautiful, with the fall colours out in all their glory. In October, the average high is 21°C (70°F) while the average low is 9°C (48°F).

Winter (December to February) is moderately cold. In January, the average high is 7°C (45°F) while the average low is -3°C (27°F). Snowfall is erratic with snowstorms occurring every once in a while. During the dark winter months, ice-skating at the Rothman Ice Rink at Dilworth Park or the Blue Cross River Rink Winterfest offers an unforgettable experience.
